In a recent online campaign, Indian celebrities and social media influencers are rallying behind calls to boycott Maldives and its tourist spots. This comes after some Maldivians, including a minister, posted anti-India comments on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The dispute originated from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, sparking interest in the Indian island among travel enthusiasts.
During Modi’s visit, he inaugurated development projects and showcased the beauty of Lakshadweep’s beaches, garnering attention on social media. However, some Maldivian officials, including Minister Mariyam Shiuna, criticized Modi’s visit, leading to a series of derogatory comments against Indians.
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra joined the movement, urging Indians to reconsider their travel plans to Maldives. Social media influencer Sonam Mahajan also encouraged canceling trips to Maldives, citing the recent anti-India sentiments expressed by a Maldives’ minister.
As the campaign gains momentum, it raises questions about the impact on Maldives’ tourism, especially considering that Indian tourists dominated the arrivals in 2023. According to data from the Maldives Tourism Ministry, Indian tourists constituted the largest group, with 2,09,198 visitors, followed by Russia and China.
The situation highlights the complex dynamics between countries in the region and the role social media plays in shaping public opinions and influencing travel choices. The hashtag #BoycottMaldives continues to trend as the online campaign gains traction.
