Congress Working Committee member Shashi Tharoor has expressed his anticipation that the Congress party might consider nominating either its president, Mallikarjun Kharge, or former AICC president Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Minister if the INDIA alliance gains power in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Tharoor pointed out the potential for a surprising election outcome due to the opposition coalition, raising the possibility of the INDIA alliance prevailing over the BJP-led NDA in the general elections.
Discussing the post-election scenario, he suggested, “I believe that after the results are announced, given that it’s a coalition of multiple parties and not a single party, the leaders of these parties will need to collaborate to select a candidate. However, my speculation is that from the Congress Party, the choice will likely be Mr. Kharge, who would then become India’s first Dalit Prime Minister, or Rahul Gandhi, as the Congress has historically been characterized as a party with familial influence.”
Mr. Tharoor, a former Union Minister, emphasized that the Prime Minister is essentially the first among equals and expressed confidence in their capability to fulfill the responsibilities assigned to them.
