Exclusive details of marine commando operation: ‘Crew comes out of safe house’

New Delhi, In a decisive move against piracy in the Arabian Sea, India’s elite marine commandos carried out a successful operation to rescue the crew of the Liberian bulk carrier MV Lila Norfolk. The 88,000-tonne vessel, en route from Brazil to Bahrain, was reportedly hijacked by pirates east of Socotra islands.

Chronology of Events:

1. Alert and Response:

– The UK Maritime Traffic Organisation reported the hijacking, prompting swift action by the Indian Navy.

– Guided missile destroyer INS Chennai was diverted from its anti-piracy patrol south of Socotra.

2. Operational Details:

– The operation involved the deployment of Integral helicopter, Sea Guardian drone, and Boeing P8I anti-submarine warfare aircraft.

– Indian Navy’s Marine Commandos successfully boarded the MV Lila Norfolk.

3. Status of the Ship:

– The Liberian bulk carrier is confirmed to be safe.

– The crew emerged from the safe house, and no pirates were found.

4. Ongoing Operation:

– Despite the successful operation, the vessel is proceeding towards Bahrain under the protection of the Indian Navy.

– The operation is still ongoing to ensure the safety and security of the ship.

Strategic Maritime Security Measures:

India has maintained a robust maritime security presence in the Arabian Sea, deploying four destroyers—INS Kochi, INS Kolkata, INS Mormugao, and INS Chennai—along with Talwar-class frigates and missile boats.

International Maritime Commitment:

This operation underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding the sea lanes of communication and sending a clear message against piracy in the region.
