Lakhnau, Uttar Pradesh: To commemorate the connection between the Indian diaspora in Suriname and their homeland, a musical program was organized in the capital city of Uttar Pradesh by the UPDF on April 9.
The presentation of the program was led by Raj Mohan, a resident of the Netherlands, along with Manav D and his companions Varun, Sundar Heera, and Kishan Heera. Renowned Bhojpuri singer from the Netherlands showcased his talent. The live performance included famous Bhojpuri cultural dance forms like Launda Nritya from Suriname and the Netherlands.
Avneesh Awasthi, present at the event, emphasized the significance of Bhojpuri language and culture, stating that the diaspora community is a part of the state’s identity. He mentioned the visit of the honorable Chief Minister to Mauritius during his first term, highlighting the government’s efforts to promote and preserve the Bhojpuri language and culture.
Swati Singh reiterated that India is their home, and the laborers who went abroad from here are now holding prestigious positions in various countries. She mentioned that Mahatma Gandhi was also a Girmitiya in his early years.
Around 200 years ago, a large number of laborers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were taken to countries like Suriname, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad, Africa, etc., as part of the Girmit system. They are known today as the Girmitiya community. The British took these laborers to work in sugarcane fields and factories. A significant population later settled in Suriname and migrated to the Netherlands. Even today, Bhojpuri culture and music are integral parts of their modern society. These artists regularly organize public events featuring Bhojpuri songs, music, ghazals, and rap, connecting the soil and culture of India with the Girmitiya community in Europe and Africa.
Many dignitaries and art enthusiasts attended the event. Pankaj Jayaswal, Chairman of UPDF, emphasized that besides connecting the diaspora, the forum aims to familiarize people with the rich musical art and tradition of Bhojpuri culture. Similar programs are planned both domestically and internationally. The event was graced by the presence of Dharmendra Singh, Member of Legislative Council, along with Avneesh Awasthi, advisor to the Chief Minister, and former minister Sushri Swati Singh. Notable personalities like Ashok Chaube, Subhash Kushwaha, Jay Singh, Akhand Shahi Deepak Tripathi, Ananya Singh, among others, were also present.
