Tragedy struck the Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine as two first responders lost their lives in rocket attacks launched by Russia. Ukrainian police reported that the village of Komyshuvakha, situated near the frontline in Zaporizhzhia—annexed by Russia last year—was the target of a series of rocket strikes. The initial strikes resulted in four local residents sustaining injuries and a residential building catching fire.
Regrettably, when police and rescuers arrived at the scene, a subsequent strike by Russian forces claimed the lives of two emergency service workers, while three others sustained injuries in the line of duty.
This unfortunate incident unfolded amid a broader context of heightened tensions, with Russia executing a significant drone attack on Ukraine. Striking infrastructure facilities, the assault led to power outages in over 400 towns and villages across the south, southeast, and north of Ukraine.
Ukraine’s air defenses responded by successfully intercepting 29 out of 38 Iranian-made Shahed drones launched from Russian territory. Despite these efforts, one of the drones breached defenses, hitting an energy infrastructure facility in the southern Odesa region, leaving 2,000 homes without power.
Simultaneously, Ukrainian troops engaged in efforts to repel Russian forces positioned on the east bank of the Dnipro River, marking a strategic move to push back against the longstanding conflict. The military reported Ukraine’s successful establishment of multiple bridgeheads on the river’s occupied side, representing a potential advancement in the stagnant war.
Ukraine’s General Staff highlighted 12 thwarted attacks by the Russian army between Friday and Saturday. As Ukrainian forces aim to diminish the influence of Russian army units along the Dnipro, the wider objective is to alleviate pressure on the western bank of the Kherson region.
Amid these military maneuvers, hundreds of protesters gathered in Kyiv, demanding action against corruption and a reallocation of public funds to bolster the armed forces. This marked the 10th protest in a series of demonstrations, emphasizing public discontent over municipal projects.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, addressing the ongoing conflict, called upon Russian President Vladimir Putin to initiate a peaceful resolution by withdrawing troops. Scholz affirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense against the Russian invasion.
