Islamabad, Responding swiftly to the Indian Supreme Court’s unanimous decision upholding the abrogation of Article 370, Pakistan asserted that the verdict holds “no legal value” according to international law. Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani held a press conference, emphasizing that India’s “unilateral and illegal actions” of August 5, 2019, are not recognized by international law, and Kashmiris retain an inalienable right to self-determination.
Jilani categorically rejected the judgment, deeming it a “travesty of justice.” He underscored that the final resolution of Jammu and Kashmir should align with relevant UN Security Council Resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
“Pakistan does not acknowledge the supremacy of the Indian Constitution over Jammu and Kashmir. Any process subservient to the Indian Constitution carries no legal significance,” declared Jilani, adding that India cannot evade its international obligations using domestic legislations and judicial verdicts as a pretext.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have heightened since the abrogation of Article 370, with Pakistan expressing concerns over changes in the demographic structure and political landscape of Kashmir. Jilani pledged Pakistan’s unwavering political, diplomatic, and moral support to the people of Kashmir for the realization of their inalienable right to self-determination.
The minister announced that Pakistan will convene a meeting of all stakeholders to determine its future course of action in response to the Supreme Court’s verdict.
Former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif criticized the verdict, branding it a “biased decision” that violated international laws and betrayed the sacrifice of millions of Kashmiris. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party, echoed similar sentiments, stating that India does not adhere to international laws and UN resolutions, emphasizing that parliament and courts cannot rewrite international agreements.
