Patna: In a recent address at the Knowledge Bhavan during the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Day program organized by the Rural Development Department, Minister Shravan Kumar highlighted Bihar’s impressive strides in afforestation. He mentioned that before Nitish Kumar took office as Chief Minister, the green cover was at 9%, but it has now surged to an impressive 16%, surpassing the national average of 33%.
Minister Kumar emphasized the need to further increase afforestation to mitigate the adverse effects of changing weather patterns.
15.55 Crore Tree Plantations in Bihar
Minister Kumar revealed that Bihar has successfully planted a staggering 15.55 crore trees. This initiative has led to the restoration of ponds, prevention of soil erosion, and freeing up water bodies, ultimately providing housing for 1,735 affected families. The program began by watering existing plants before proceeding with the massive tree plantation.
International Recognition for Bihar’s “Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali” Campaign
Last month, Bihar received international acclaim for its “Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali” campaign at the 28th Climate Summit in Dubai. The state showcased commendable efforts to increase forest land from 9.9% (2019-21) to a notable 16% this year.
Bihar’s Role Model Status in Climate Crisis Management
Vandana Preyasi, Secretary of Bihar’s Forest and Environment Department, highlighted Bihar’s exemplary role in climate crisis management through afforestation under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s leadership. The state’s forest area increased from 9.9% in 2012-13 to an impressive 14.75% in 2019-21, now reaching 16% this year.
Ongoing Efforts for Forest Expansion
Secretary Preyasi shared that continuous efforts are underway for the expansion of the forest area in Bihar over the past decade, yielding satisfactory results. Bihar has also presented the Green Budget for 2020-21, focusing on environmental conservation.
Water Consumption Increases with Rising Temperature
Dr. Sarvan Kumar, Secretary of the Rural Development Department, warned about the continuous challenges of floods and droughts in Bihar, causing financial losses of up to one thousand crores. He highlighted a 10% increase in water consumption for every degree rise in temperature.
Global Recognition for Bihar’s Water Conservation Efforts
Rahul Kumar, CEO of Jeevika, and Director of Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Mission, mentioned that Bihar’s efforts gained appreciation and discussion at COP conferences in Egypt and Dubai. Bihar received the National Water Award at the fourth National Water Conference at the national level.
