In a significant address at the 20th Subroto Mukherjee seminar on “India and the Global South: Challenges and Opportunities,” Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari unveiled a promising prospect. He asserted that India’s burgeoning indigenous defense capabilities now pave the way for robust collaborations with nations in the Global South. The key areas identified for potential exports include fighter jets, combat helicopters, and missile systems.
Chaudhari expounded on the export potential of specific platforms such as the light combat aircraft, light combat helicopter, and Akash missile system. These, he argued, provide not only competitive but also reliable options for air forces in the Global South, thereby bolstering India’s economic and technological influence on the global stage.
The Air Chief Marshal proposed establishing joint ventures with these nations, fostering mutual benefit through co-development initiatives, shared production facilities, and the creation of regional maintenance and support hubs. He emphasized that this collaborative approach would not only enhance India’s defense exports but also contribute to the technological capabilities of partner nations.
Furthermore, Chaudhari highlighted the need for capability development in areas like global supply chains, the creation of manufacturing hubs, and the establishment of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities. He suggested that joint research and development projects, defense innovation, and technological exchange should be explored to deepen the partnerships.
The Chief of Air Staff painted a vision of the Indian Air Force acting as a catalyst for progress, fostering strategic partnerships, and contributing to the collective advancement of the Global South. He pointed out that the Air Force has already trained over 5,000 foreign personnel from these countries, with the number steadily increasing.
Chaudhari concluded by underscoring India’s proactive role in international fora, protecting the interests of the Global South and championing their concerns. He emphasized the need for identifying contemporary security challenges faced by India and the Global South, urging the creation of forums for collaborative discussions on shared concerns such as terrorism, cyber threats, and regional conflicts.
This detailed perspective from the Indian Air Force Chief outlines a comprehensive strategy for defense collaboration, technological exchange, and mutual growth with nations in the Global South.
