Bengalaluru: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has signalled that the protracted leadership impasse in Karnataka will be settled following consultations in New Delhi with senior party figures, including Rahul Gandhi, chief minister Siddaramaiah and deputy chief minister D K Shivakumar.
Speaking on Thursday, Mr Kharge confirmed he would convene a meeting of key leaders to chart a clear path forward and end the uncertainty that has overshadowed the state government midway through its five-year term.
“The way ahead will be discussed and the matter will be resolved,” Mr Kharge told reporters. “There is confusion that needs to be brought to an end.”
The internal power struggle has intensified in recent weeks amid persistent speculation of a potential change in chief ministership, fuelled by a reported 2023 power-sharing understanding between Mr Siddaramaiah and Mr Shivakumar.
When asked whether the Karnataka chief minister and his deputy would be summoned to the capital, Mr Kharge replied: “We will certainly call them. Rahul Gandhi will be part of it, along with other senior leaders including the CM and deputy CM. After discussions with everyone, a decision will be taken.”
The Congress president emphasised that decisions on leadership would be collective rather than individual. “The high command means a team, not one person. Our high command team will discuss and decide,” he said.
Responding to Mr Kharge’s remarks, Mr Siddaramaiah indicated he would travel to Delhi if formally invited, while Mr Shivakumar stated: “Myself and the chief minister – both of us will discuss and go if the high command calls.”
The outcome of the Delhi deliberations is being closely watched, as it will determine political stability in Karnataka, India’s key southern technology and manufacturing hub, for the remainder of the Congress government’s term.
