New Delhi, In the midst of Congress grappling with fallout after Mamata Banerjee’s endorsement of Mallikarjun Kharge as the Opposition’s prime ministerial candidate, a Janata Dal (United) MLA, Gopal Mandal, signals dissent. Mandal advocates for Nitish Kumar, stating that Kharge is relatively unknown to the public. He further emphasizes that people recognize Nitish Kumar, making him a more viable choice. The proposal came during the recent INDIA bloc meeting, where Kharge’s nomination was reportedly backed by Arvind Kejriwal.
In response to the escalating situation, Mallikarjun Kharge has refrained from commenting on the proposal, emphasizing the primary focus on winning the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Reports suggest outreach efforts, including calls between Kharge and Nitish Kumar, with Rahul Gandhi engaging with Sharad Pawar for possible damage control. Despite Nitish Kumar’s humble response to the ‘PM question,’ speculations linger about his leadership aspirations.
The disagreement within the opposition camp underscores the challenges of consensus-building, potentially impacting the unity needed to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming elections.
