In a bid to achieve self-reliance in the manufacturing of forged wheels, Indian Railways has launched a significant project. The initiative aims to produce 2,30,000 forged wheels annually, addressing the current annual requirement of 80,000 wheels. India presently imports a substantial portion of its yearly need of 4,40,000 train wheels. Under the ‘Make in India’ campaign, the project seeks to boost indigenous capacity and establish a forged wheels plant within the country.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the project would not only meet domestic demand but also facilitate exports, with 80,000 wheels dedicated to domestic use and the remainder to be exported. The move comes in response to the minister’s acknowledgment that a significant portion of India’s train wheel requirements is met through imports. The ministry is taking measures to enhance indigenous capacity, including awarding a contract for the supply of 80,000 forged wheels annually as part of a long-term agreement since June 2023.
Additionally, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) has commissioned a forged wheels plant in Raebareli, further contributing to India’s progress towards self-reliance. The new plant, established in September 2021, operates under an off-take agreement with the railways to supply 80,000 forged wheels annually.
By undertaking such initiatives, India aims to strengthen its position in forged wheels production, aligning with the ‘Make in India’ initiative and reducing dependence on imports, thereby fostering self-reliance in critical railway components.
