An armed alliance of ethnic minority groups in Myanmar, known as the Three Brotherhood Alliance, declared on Friday that they have successfully captured Laukkai, a notorious northern town bordering China. The town, long associated with online scams, gambling, and prostitution, has witnessed a mass exodus of people since November as the alliance intensified its offensive in northern Shan state.
The Three Brotherhood Alliance, consisting of the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), the Arakan Army (AA), and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), asserted control over Laukkai. According to their statement, members of the Myanmar Army’s Military Operational Command in Laukkai were disarmed, turning the town into an area free from military presence. The alliance claimed the capture of numerous junta soldiers, including officers.
The Myanmar military, also known as the junta, has not officially responded to these claims. TNLA Brigadier-General Tar Bhone Kyaw confirmed the takeover and highlighted that the people in the region would no longer have to live under the military regime.
Laukkai is the latest addition to the towns falling under the alliance’s control, impacting trade between China and Myanmar’s junta. The escalating conflict in the region prompted Beijing to advise its citizens to leave the area last month. The alliance’s offensive has not only strained relations between China and the junta but has also galvanized opposition groups within Myanmar.
The situation remains fluid, with more than half a million people displaced, and clashes spreading to various parts of the country. The international community closely watches the developments as Myanmar faces significant challenges in maintaining stability.
