Dubai, In a diplomatic move at the COP28 UN Climate Summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepped onto the global stage by proposing India as the venue for the Conference of the Parties (COP) summit in 2028. The announcement was made during a crucial address in Dubai as the climate change conference unfolded. PM Modi, known for his strategic and forward-looking approach, took the opportunity to showcase India’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
In his address, Prime Minister Modi underlined India’s remarkable feat of achieving emission intensity targets 11 years ahead of the stipulated time frame. The country remains steadfast in its pursuit of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets.
“Today, India has presented an excellent example of the balance between ecology and economy before the world. Despite India being home to 17% of the world’s population, its contribution to Global Carbon Emissions is less than 4%. India is one of those few economies of the world that is on the path to meet NDC targets,” Prime Minister Modi stated.
The proposal to host COP33 in 2028 signifies India’s ambition to play a pivotal role in shaping the global climate change agenda. The nation’s proactive stance on reducing emissions intensity was reinforced during the speech. PM Modi articulated India’s commitment to bringing down emissions intensity by 45% by 2030 and boosting the share of non-fossil fuel to 50%. Furthermore, India has set its sights on achieving net zero emissions by the year 2070.
The COP, an annual United Nations-hosted meeting, convenes delegates from nearly 200 countries to deliberate and negotiate actions against climate change. This year’s summit, held in Dubai, marked a historic moment as the largest-ever UN climate summit with a staggering 80,000 registered participants.
PM Modi’s proposal positions India as a frontrunner in the fight against climate change and underscores the nation’s readiness to take a leading role in global climate diplomacy. As the summit progresses, the international community eagerly awaits the response to this bold diplomatic move by India.
