Washington, D.C. – The President of the United States, Joe Biden, faced intense scrutiny as he was interrogated in connection with an ongoing investigation concerning classified documents discovered at both his former private office and residence, according to a statement released by the White House on Monday.
The investigation, prompted by the discovery of secret papers dating back to Biden’s tenure as Vice President under Barack Obama, led the U.S. Attorney General to appoint an independent prosecutor, Special Counsel Robert Hur, earlier this year.
The White House disclosed that the voluntary interview with the 80-year-old Democratic President took place over the course of Sunday and Monday at the White House itself. A spokesperson stated, “As we have said from the beginning, the President and the White House are fully cooperating with this investigation.”
Moreover, they affirmed the commitment to transparency while safeguarding the integrity of the investigation, deferring further inquiries to the Justice Department.
This investigation initially unfolded when documents were uncovered within a private think tank office in Washington in November 2022, where President Biden had previously worked. Subsequently, additional documents were located in the President’s Wilmington, Delaware garage in December 2022, and in his home library in January 2023.
It’s worth noting that former President Donald Trump, Biden’s potential Republican rival in the 2024 election, is separately facing legal proceedings regarding the alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office. Special Counsel Jack Smith has accused Trump of taking classified materials to his Mar-A-Lago estate in Florida and refusing to return them. Trump pleaded not guilty in June to charges related to unlawfully retaining national defense information, obstructing justice, and making false statements.
The parallels between the Trump and Biden document cases have been a focal point of discussion among Republicans, further complicating the political landscape.
In addition to these legal challenges, President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, is confronting his own legal woes, including a special counsel investigation into allegations of tax fraud and illegal possession of firearms.
