New Delhi, In a contentious session, a private member bill aiming to repeal the Waqf Act, 1995, was introduced in the Rajya Sabha. BJP member Harnath Singh Yadav moved the Waqf Repeal Bill 2022, triggering strong protests from opposition parties, including Congress, TMC, DMK, CPI, CPI (M), and RJD.
The introduction of the bill proceeded after a division of votes, with 53 members, primarily from the treasury benches, supporting it, while 32 opposed the move. Despite the opposition, Yadav successfully introduced the bill, setting the stage for future discussions.
The Waqf Act, enacted in 1995, governs matters related to Waqf properties, and any move to repeal it sparks significant debate. The bill will be scheduled for further deliberations in the coming sessions.
