In the face of mounting criticism, Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, delivered a resolute response on Friday, asserting his commitment to his World Cup aspirations and challenging his critics. With Pakistan needing an extraordinary victory against England to secure a spot in the semi-finals, Azam faces intensified scrutiny over his captaincy, a position he has held for three years.
Azam, addressing the criticism, stated, “I have not performed the way I should have in the World Cup, that’s why people are saying that I am under pressure. I am under no pressure.” While acknowledging differing opinions and advice, he confronted his critics by urging them to communicate directly, rather than through television commentary. “It is easy to give advice on TV. If you want to give me some advice, you can message me,” he declared.
Despite his challenges, Azam remains optimistic about the team’s chances against England, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning to achieve the daunting target. Reflecting on past setbacks, particularly the defeat to South Africa, he acknowledged the need for improved performance and expressed regret over not meeting expectations.
Facing likely elimination, Azam asserted that Pakistan should not be prematurely dismissed, highlighting their strong performances in recent T20 tournaments and Asia Cup. He defiantly asked, “Do you think we have lost all World Cups since 1999?” underscoring the team’s resilience and competitiveness in various cricketing arenas.
