In a post-mortem of India’s World Cup final loss against Australia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials convened with head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma. The meeting, held 11 days after the final, aimed to analyze India’s performance and chart the course for the upcoming South Africa tour.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah, vice president Rajeev Shukla, and treasurer Ashish Shelar probed Dravid and Rohit on the factors contributing to India’s defeat in the highly anticipated clash. According to reports, the meeting took place in New Delhi, with Rohit joining remotely from London.
Head coach Rahul Dravid reportedly pointed fingers at the Ahmedabad pitch, asserting that it didn’t behave as expected. Dravid emphasized that the pitch’s lack of turn played a pivotal role in India’s inability to contain Australia during their chase. The pitch, a used one from the league match against Pakistan, was intended to favor spin, but it backfired for the Indian team.
The decision to use a previously employed pitch was based on the advice of the local curator. While not mandatory, fresh pitches are usually preferred for knockout matches. In this World Cup, however, all knockout games were played on used pitches. Dravid justified the strategy, noting its success throughout the tournament but admitting its failure in the crucial final.
BCCI officials questioned Dravid about the rationale behind persisting with the spin-friendly plan when the Indian seamers, led by Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, had been performing well. Dravid defended the strategy, highlighting its effectiveness until the final encounter.
The meeting also addressed the selection of Indian squads for the South Africa tour and outlined the future course of action for the team. The upcoming series will not only be a test of the players but also mark the beginning of India’s pursuit to clinch an ICC trophy, a longstanding aspiration.
As the team reflects on the World Cup disappointment, the focus shifts to regrouping and preparing for the challenges that lie ahead.
