In a recent turn of events, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors, headed by former pacer Ajit Agarkar, expressed their desire to reinstate Rohit Sharma as the captain for India’s T20 International (T20I) team during the South Africa tour. However, the decision took an unexpected twist after Rohit Sharma, currently on holiday in the UK, requested a break from the white-ball leg of the tour.
The selection committee, convening at a New Delhi hotel, had a virtual presence of Rohit Sharma, who joined the meeting via video call from London. Despite the selectors’ inclination to hand over the T20I captaincy to Rohit Sharma, they respected his request for an extended break, agreeing to his decision. Rohit, on holiday with his family, is set to return to lead the Indian side in the two-match Test series beginning on December 26.
While Rohit Sharma’s return as the T20I captain seems imminent, no official announcement has been made by the BCCI regarding India’s T20 captaincy. Hardik Pandya had been leading the team unofficially in Rohit’s absence since the T20 World Cup in Australia last year.
The uncertainty around Hardik Pandya’s return, following an injury sustained during the ODI World Cup, may impact his role as an automatic choice for T20 captaincy in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Rohit Sharma, known for his leadership prowess, is expected to lead the team if he agrees to take on the responsibility for the T20 World Cup.
Rohit Sharma had previously expressed reluctance to play the shortest format after the T20 World Cup in 2022, focusing more on 50-over cricket.
Other senior members of the World Cup squad, including Virat Kohli, have also been granted breaks from the limited-overs games during the South Africa tour. Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul will lead the national team in T20Is and ODIs, respectively.
The T20I series is scheduled to commence on December 10.
