LONDON, Former tennis world number one, Rafa Nadal, confirmed his return to the courts at the Brisbane International, a key warm-up event preceding the Australian Open in January. Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, last competed in the Australian Open earlier this year, succumbing to a hip flexor problem in the second round.
Following expectations of an eight-week hiatus, Nadal underwent surgery on a hip muscle in June, marking a prolonged absence from competitive play. In a social media video on Friday, Nadal expressed his eagerness to return, stating, “After a year away from competition, it’s time to come back. It will be in Brisbane, the first week of January. I’ll see you there.”
Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley had previously confirmed Nadal’s participation in the upcoming Grand Slam. Despite a challenging season that saw Nadal drop out of the top 100 for the first time in two decades, he holds the opportunity for a protected ranking due to his extended absence.
Nadal, a two-time Australian Open champion (2009 and 2022), has announced his intention to retire after the 2024 season. Injuries have significantly impacted his appearances on the Tour, with a desire to play one more French Open and represent Spain at the Paris Olympics next year before concluding his illustrious career.
The Brisbane International, returning after a three-year hiatus initially caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, is scheduled to run from December 31 to January 7. The Australian Open will follow, taking place at Melbourne Park from January 14 to 28.
Reflecting on his Grand Slam ambitions, Nadal acknowledged the dominance of Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic, who has surpassed him with 24 major titles. Nadal, however, emphasized his focus on enjoying the game in the twilight of his career. “I won’t win more Grand Slams than Djokovic, but I will have the chance to enjoy myself again,” he remarked last month.
