New Delhi: BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court questioning the citizenship of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Swamy alleges that Rahul Gandhi holds British citizenship and possesses a British passport. He has requested the court to direct the central government to take appropriate action in this matter.
Swamy has raised this issue before, writing to the central government in August 2019. Citing Article 9 of the Indian Constitution and the Citizenship Act of 1955, Swamy argued that a person can only hold citizenship of one country. He stated that if an Indian citizen acquires citizenship of another country, they must renounce their Indian citizenship.
Previously, on April 20, 2019, the central government had issued a notice to Rahul Gandhi, seeking clarification regarding his citizenship.
