The incidents of dog bites in Bihar have seen an alarming increase of more than 200 times. According to the latest economic survey data for the fiscal year 2023-24, this revelation comes in comparison to the preceding financial year 2022-23. The Bihar Economic Survey (2023-24) report by the state government highlights that being bitten by dogs is now considered the most prevalent ailment in the state. The analysis of figures reveals that in the year 2022-23, a total of 207,181 people were bitten by dogs, a stark contrast from the mere 9,809 cases in 2021-22.
On average, 600 people are bitten by dogs every day in Bihar, as per the survey. Malaria ranks as the second most prevalent disease in the state, with 45,532 cases reported in 2022-23. The report specifies that the capital city, Patna, witnessed the highest number of dog bite incidents at 22,599, surpassing any other district in the state. Additionally, Nalanda reported 17,074 cases, Gopalganj 15,253, Vaishali 13,110, West Champaran 11,291, East Champaran 9,975, Madhubani 8,401, Araria 6,710. The districts of Nawada, Sitamarhi, Jamui, Jehanabad, Bhojpur, Madhepura, and Darbhanga also reported significant cases.
Officials respond to the situation by acknowledging the gravity of the issue, particularly in the capital, Patna. Animesh Kumar Parashar, the Municipal Commissioner of Patna, expressed awareness of the situation and stated that the municipal corporation would intensify its campaign to address this threat promptly. The municipal corporation is also considering engaging non-governmental organizations in their efforts towards this objective.
