Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has ordered a judicial inquiry into alleged corruption in university campuses across the state. On Friday, Governor Bose claimed that university campuses in the state have become “mini hubs of violence” and have been misused for alleged violence, corruption, and political purposes. The Governor’s office issued orders for a thorough judicial investigation into the misuse of universities for political agendas.

The state government swiftly responded to Governor Bose’s directive by issuing a nine-page response to his “report card”. Within hours, the Governor had ordered a judicial probe into allegations of corruption and violence in the state’s universities. The Governor’s decision, communicated by the Raj Bhavan, indicates escalating tensions between the state government and the Governor’s office.

It has been disclosed that a committee comprising retired judges from the Supreme Court or the Calcutta High Court will investigate these allegations. The decision from Raj Bhavan has intensified the confrontation between the state and the Governor. In response to the Governor’s directive, State Education Minister Bratya Basu tweeted, highlighting the necessity for media dissemination of such directives and questioning the extent of the Governor’s powers in issuing investigation orders.

Sources reveal that the Governor perceived all state-run university campuses as mini hubs of corruption. Recently, allegations of sexual harassment against women and land grabbing were leveled against local leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress in the Sandeshkhali area of North 24 Parganas district. In response, the Governor has ordered a judicial inquiry, following Basu’s removal from the cabinet for allegedly violating electoral conduct norms during a meeting with politicians at Gaur Banga University on March 30.

The Governor accused Basu of “tarnishing the university system” by organizing the meeting. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against Mamata Banerjee. Stay tuned for further updates.
