External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, addressing a gathering in London under the theme ‘How a Billion People See the World,’ extolled the United States as a nation currently in the process of reinventing itself, asserting that it is not undergoing decline but rather strategic transformation.
During the event organized by Wilton Park at the Royal Over-Seas League, Jaishankar lauded the United States as a dynamic force, emphasizing its instrumental role during the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. Reflecting on the past, he noted changes in deployment patterns and proximity, suggesting a shift in global dynamics.
“I would say America today is a power which is reinventing itself. I don’t think it’s a power which is declining,” he asserted, highlighting the nation’s adaptability.
Acknowledging America’s pivotal role in shaping the Indo-Pacific region, Jaishankar commended the United States for embracing openness and collaboration, exemplified by the formation of QUAD, showcasing strategic wisdom in partnering with other nations.
The minister’s remarks came as part of a broader discourse covering India’s growth trajectory, intricate relations with China, and the evolving identity of India. Concluding his five-day visit to the UK, Jaishankar described the engagements as “timely” and emphasized the significant progress in free trade agreement negotiations.
“This visit was timely, and much needed because these personal interactions do a lot in really developing an understanding between countries. I was very satisfied; the British system really made an effort to engage at all the relevant levels from the prime minister downwards, and that itself is a statement of the closeness of our ties today,” he stated.
In articulating the nuanced dynamics of global geopolitics, Jaishankar’s observations underscore the complexity and adaptability inherent in the transformation of major powers, particularly the United States, shaping the contemporary geopolitical landscape.
