In a significant address on Constitution Day at the Supreme Court, President Droupadi Murmu urged the establishment of an All India Judicial Service exam for the selection of judges from diverse backgrounds across the country. Emphasizing the need for an inclusive approach, Murmu stated that such an examination would provide opportunities for talented candidates nationwide.
Earlier this year, the then Law Minister, Kiren Rijiju, highlighted the government’s perspective on the importance of a well-framed All India Judicial Service to strengthen the justice delivery system. This system would facilitate the induction of qualified legal talent through a merit-based selection process, addressing concerns of social inclusion and representation for marginalized sections of society.
Article 312 of the Constitution allows for the creation of an All India Judicial Service for district judge positions and above. Despite discussions and deliberations over the past decade, there is currently no consensus among major stakeholders on the establishment of such a service.
The President’s Constitution Day celebration also included the unveiling of a statue of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar in the Supreme Court premises. Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud emphasized the role of the Supreme Court as a “people’s court” and encouraged citizens to seek justice without fear. The event was attended by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and other dignitaries.
