In a resounding announcement, the Indian government has released an ambitious report outlining its strategy to propel the nation towards a $1 trillion digital economy by 2026. Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, revealed the comprehensive roadmap that encompasses a multi-year plan. The core elements of this strategy encompass bolstering support for startups, amplifying the nation’s skill base, fortifying computational infrastructure, and establishing a robust data platform dedicated to AI research.
Chandrasekhar emphasized the pivotal role of artificial intelligence (AI) in this grand endeavor. He introduced the draft National Strategy on Robotics as a vital component of the broader India AI program, describing it as a “kinetic enabler” for realizing the trillion-dollar digital economy dream. This vision is underpinned by an unwavering commitment to leveraging AI for societal enhancement.
The government’s aspirations extend beyond mere economic growth. Chandrasekhar outlined the intention to foster an ecosystem conducive to startups while simultaneously concentrating on developing a formidable workforce with comprehensive AI skills. Furthermore, a pivotal focus of the program lies in fortifying India’s computational infrastructure, aiming to provide the foundation for cutting-edge AI research and innovation.
One of the significant recommendations in the report is the creation of a dedicated India data sets platform. This resource is poised to serve domestic startups and researchers by providing access to GPU (graphical processing unit)-based computational infrastructure. This infrastructure will, in turn, offer the necessary resources for the development of indigenous AI engines and models, enhancing India’s technological prowess.
Chandrasekhar articulated the holistic approach embraced by the Government of India regarding AI. Under the flagship program, IndiaAI, a mission-centric strategy ensures a precise and comprehensive plan to address various aspects of the AI ecosystem. This spans areas such as computational infrastructure, data, AI financing, research and innovation, skill development, and institutional capacity for data management. The ultimate goal is to unlock the full potential of AI to accelerate India’s progress.
The IndiaAI computer platform, a prominent feature of this grand vision, will be established as a public-private partnership (PPP) project. This initiative aims to significantly augment GPU capacity for startups and researchers, facilitating their efforts in training AI models.
Chandrasekhar underlined the exhaustive nature of the strategy, emphasizing the identification of actionable items across all facets of IndiaAI. This meticulous approach is directed towards the overarching goal of “AI for all.” He also announced the forthcoming inaugural Global India AI Summit, scheduled for December 10, where leaders and participants from the AI and broader tech ecosystem will converge to chart the course forward.
To ensure inclusivity and transparency, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has initiated a consultation paper on the National Strategy on Robotics. The paper is open for public comments until October 31, inviting stakeholders and experts to contribute their insights to this transformative journey.
