Nalanda Mahavihara, the venerable ancient monastic university, graced the welcoming arena at the ceremonial dinner hosted for G20 delegates by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This image, steeped in historical significance, is a testament to India’s rich heritage of scholarship and knowledge dissemination. The Mahavihara, which thrived between the 5th and 12th centuries in what is now Bihar, encapsulates the intellectual advancements of ancient India during the eras of Mahavira and Buddha.
The portrayal of Nalanda Mahavihara, embellished with the G20 logo on one side and India’s presidency theme, ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – One Earth. One Family. One Future, on the other, provided a captivating backdrop. Both President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi extended their warm greetings to the heads of state and other dignitaries amidst the splendid setting of the Bharat Mandapam, with Nalanda Mahavihara as a magnificent backdrop.
Prime Minister Modi took the opportunity to elucidate the significance of this illustrious university to several G20 leaders, including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Nalanda’s values of diversity, meritocracy, intellectual freedom, collective governance, autonomy, and knowledge sharing resonated deeply with the fundamental principles of democracy.
Nalanda, hailed as one of the world’s earliest international universities, stands as a living testament to India’s unwavering commitment to advanced education and its aspiration to foster global harmony. This ethos harmonizes seamlessly with India’s G20 Presidency theme, ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ emphasizing a united global community.
This monumental event showcases India’s dedication to nurturing a harmonious world and underscores the enduring spirit of its educational pursuits, echoing through the ages. The image of Nalanda Mahavihara will remain etched in the annals of history as a symbol of enlightenment and intellectual excellence.
