New Delhi: In a noteworthy development, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) panel has given its nod to a proposal aimed at altering the way India is referenced in school textbooks. The proposal advocates for replacing the term ‘India’ with ‘Bharat.’
Under the leadership of committee chairman C. I. Isaac, the NCERT panel has introduced substantial changes, marking a transition from ‘ancient history’ to ‘classical history’ in the curriculum. The adjustments also include the incorporation of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) into the syllabus across various subjects.
Chairman C. I. Isaac stated, “The committee has unanimously recommended the use of ‘Bharat’ in textbooks for students across all classes. Additionally, we have proposed the introduction of ‘classical history’ in place of ‘ancient history’ within the textbooks.”
The committee’s recommendations extend to emphasizing “Hindu victories” in various historical battles in the textbooks. Isaac, who also serves as a member of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), pointed out that while the textbooks currently mention failures, they do not adequately highlight victories over the Mughals and sultans.
This overhaul of educational materials is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. To facilitate this process, the NCERT recently formed a 19-member National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC) tasked with finalizing the curriculum, textbooks, and learning materials for these classes.
Isaac also revealed that the committee recommended the introduction of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) into the curriculum for all subjects, marking a significant shift in India’s educational landscape.
These modifications reflect the evolving educational approach in India, fostering a deeper connection with its historical and cultural identity.
