Prime Minister Narendra Modi, exuding confidence in his ability to bring about further reforms, spoke at the International Lawyers’ Conference organized by the Bar Council of India in New Delhi. During his address, he emphasized the need to simplify laws for the public, proposing the creation of two drafts for each legislation, one in legal terminology and the other in simpler language for broader understanding.
Modi stressed the importance of making laws more accessible, stating, “Citizens should feel that the law belongs to them.” He also highlighted his government’s efforts to draft new laws in plain language, citing the Digital Personal Data Protection Act of 2023 as an example.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister celebrated the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill, which reserves 33% of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures, as a significant step towards women-led development in India.
Modi also touched upon India’s recent successes, including hosting the G20 Summit and the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 near the lunar south pole. He emphasized the role of the legal profession in strengthening India’s foundations and called for a global system of interconnected laws to address borderless crimes such as cyberterrorism and money laundering.
In terms of dispute resolution, Modi praised alternate dispute resolution methods like mediation and Lok Adalats, which have become more crucial with the complexity of commercial transactions. He commended the Supreme Court’s translation of judgments into regional languages to aid litigants.
The Prime Minister concluded by advocating for the streamlining of legal processes through technology, reforms, and innovations. He encouraged leveraging technological advancements in the judicial system.
The event was attended by dignitaries such as the Chief Justice of India, law ministers, and legal professionals, making it a significant platform for discussing emerging challenges in the justice delivery system.
