After the DMCH and AIIMS, Darbhanga is set to witness the opening of a super-specialty hospital dedicated to cancer treatment. The outpatient department (OPD) of the 100-bed Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital is slated to open to patients in May. Given the higher prevalence of throat cancer patients in northern Bihar, the government has decided to convert a building in Gangwara, near Darbhanga Sadar Hospital, into a 100-bed super-specialty cancer hospital.
Preparations Underway for MU Health Center
As per information from the Health Department, the proposal to hand over this hospital, equipped with 100 beds, to the Homi Bhabha Research Center in Muzaffarpur has received cabinet approval. The government has even released an official resolution affirming this decision. Subsequently, preparations are in full swing at the Homi Bhabha Center to establish the MU Health Center. Within the next three months, outpatient services will commence in Gangwara. The initiation of this hospital will benefit cancer patients in the Kosi and Purnia districts, including Darbhanga. Treatment will be available for cancers of the head, mouth, and neck.
Government to Own the Hospital
On Tuesday, the Health Department decided to hand over the 100-bed hospital, along with equipment, to the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Center in Muzaffarpur. This hospital will function as a cancer hospital specializing in cancers of the head, mouth, and neck. The agreement includes a commitment to operate this facility as the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, Darbhanga, for the next ten years. A review will be conducted after this period. The hospital’s operation will be managed by the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, Muzaffarpur, while ownership will remain with the government.
Funds Allocated for Operation
The government has allocated a revolving fund of ₹10 crores for the operation of this hospital. Various government schemes, including the Chief Minister’s Medical Assistance Fund and the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, will also extend their benefits to patients in this hospital. While the medical staff and other personnel will be managed by Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, the government will retain ownership of the facility.
