In response to China’s expanding naval presence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and growing collaboration with Pakistan, India is intensifying its vigilance, announced Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar on Friday. With China maintaining a sustained presence in the IOR, India is revising operational plans to safeguard its interests.

China, boasting the world’s largest navy with over 360 warships and submarines, now has a consistent deployment of six to eight warships in the IOR at any given time, along with research and fishing vessels. Admiral Kumar highlighted the strategic importance of monitoring these activities, stating, “We constantly revise our plans and capability-development programs.”

Notably, Pakistan aims to expand its navy with Chinese support, a development closely monitored by India. The collaborative efforts between China and Pakistan prompt regular reassessment of India’s strategies and capabilities. In light of budgetary constraints, the Indian Navy, currently with 132 warships, aims to reach 175 warships by 2035.

Addressing concerns, Admiral Kumar assured that the Indian Navy remains vigilant, with units “mission-deployed” across the IOR. Frequent interactions and exercises with friendly foreign navies, especially the United States, contribute to building trust and interoperability to address challenges collectively.

Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh emphasized India’s commitment to developing indigenous defense capabilities, noting investments in satellite, cyber, space, and other domains. The Navy is adapting to meet future challenges, recognizing the need for a self-sustaining and self-reliant defense-industrial base.

In a historic move, the Navy has appointed its first woman Commanding Officer for a fast-attack craft (FAC). The Lieutenant Commander, undergoing pre-commissioning training, symbolizes the Navy’s commitment to “all roles-all ranks” for female personnel.

Additionally, the Indian government is actively working to secure the return of eight former Indian Navy personnel facing the death penalty in Qatar. Admiral Kumar affirmed their commitment to ensuring the welfare of these veterans and collaboration with relevant agencies for their well-being.
