Chinese President Xi Jinping, known for his recent efforts as a global peacemaker, is facing diplomatic challenges as his response to the Israel-Hamas conflict exposes the limits of his influence in resolving complex international disputes.

China’s initial statement regarding the conflict aimed to avoid naming any aggressor and refrained from offering specific immediate assistance. This stance drew criticism, especially from Israel, where officials expressed disappointment in China’s failure to condemn the violence by Hamas.

Xi’s earlier diplomatic achievements in the Middle East, such as facilitating dialogue between Iran and Saudi Arabia and hosting Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, had boosted his global standing. However, his response to the Israel-Hamas conflict has left observers expecting more from China in terms of offering solutions or ideas to resolve the situation.

While China seeks to balance relationships with both sides of the conflict, maintaining its trade ties with Israel, it faces challenges in navigating the complexities of the Middle East. China’s neutrality in naming Hamas as the aggressor is seen as an attempt to acknowledge the regional interests of authoritarian regimes, particularly Iran, without directly involving itself in the intricacies of peacemaking in the region.

President Xi’s diplomatic efforts in the Middle East have expanded China’s presence and influence in the region, but this recent situation underscores the challenges of achieving lasting solutions to deeply rooted conflicts. Despite his attempts, Xi’s ability to bring about peace in the Middle East remains constrained.

As leaders from global South nations prepare to attend Xi’s Belt and Road Forum in Beijing, discussions on the Israel-Hamas conflict are expected to be on the agenda. China’s position of neutrality may facilitate smoother conversations, but it also reflects the reality that Beijing has limited influence over Israel’s policies.

In summary, while Xi Jinping has made strides in global diplomacy, the Israel-Hamas conflict highlights the complexities and limitations of China’s role as a peacemaker in the Middle East.
