Sanjeev Kumar Singla, a seasoned diplomat known as the “expert on Israel” among his peers, has played a pivotal role in crafting India’s foreign policy and strategic alliance with Israel since Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office in 2014. Singla’s diplomatic finesse has been instrumental in navigating India’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict while managing a substantial Indian expatriate community in Israel.

A Distinguished Career

Singla, a 1997-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, boasts a diverse career that spans critical postings in various Indian missions worldwide. His association with Israel dates back to his tenure in the Indian embassy in Tel Aviv between November 2013 and July 2014. Singla’s extensive experience encompasses diplomatic assignments in Paris (France), Dhaka (Bangladesh), and Geneva (Switzerland), along with key roles in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Shaping India-Israel Relations

Singla’s most significant contribution lies in shaping India’s diplomatic and strategic ties with Israel, a journey that evolved through distinct phases. India’s foreign policy with Israel transitioned from a lack of political ties to formal diplomatic relations post-1992. Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Israel in 2017 marked a turning point, ushering in a strategic partnership focused on innovation and knowledge sharing.

An Astute Choice by PM Modi

After recognizing Israel’s potential as a crucial partner for India, Prime Minister Modi sought an effective communicator and implementer for his vision of robust India-Israel diplomacy. Singla, then serving as Modi’s private secretary and possessing prior experience in the Israeli embassy, emerged as the natural choice. His appointment as Indian ambassador to Israel in October 2019 underscored the significance of the evolving partnership.

Singla currently leads a proficient seven-member team at the Indian embassy in Tel Aviv, effectively managing India’s interests and fostering collaboration with Israel.

A Carefully Crafted Diplomacy

Singla’s role extended to carefully articulating India’s response to events like the Gaza attack in October 2023. Prime Minister Modi’s statement, describing the attack as a “terrorist attack” without explicitly naming any party, underscored India’s considered stance and support for Israel.

A Visionary Partnership

Sanjeev Kumar Singla’s diplomatic acumen and Prime Minister Modi’s vision have transformed India-Israel relations into a strategic partnership with significant implications for both nations. Singla’s tenure as India’s ambassador in Tel Aviv continues to be a critical bridge in this evolving partnership.
