He contended that he was oblivious to the pistol’s presence in his briefcase when he cleared security checks at a US airport. It wasn’t until mid-flight, when he reached for chewing gum, that he detected the unloaded weapon. He also asserted that the firearm was properly registered in Washington state.
Jeff Wilson, who was accompanied by his wife on a five-week personal vacation to Cambodia, Malaysia, and Thailand, promptly notified Hong Kong customs officials about the firearm upon landing. However, their holiday has been disrupted as Wilson was granted bail, but his travel documents were confiscated, and he was ordered to remain in the city.
The potential penalties for possessing firearms or ammunition without a license in the region include a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison and a fine of HK$100,000 ($12,800).
