The debut of the Vande Bharat sleeper train has transitioned from the conceptual phase to the production stage, marking a significant milestone for Indian Railways. The inaugural Vande Bharat sleeper train, touted as an upgrade over the Rajdhani Express, is under construction through a collaboration between BEML and ICF, Chennai. The manufacturing process was inaugurated at BEML’s Bangalore facility in the presence of Naveen Gulati, Railway Board Member (Traction & Rolling Stock), BG Mallya, ICF GM, and Shantanu Roy, BEML CMD.

The Vande Bharat sleeper trains are slated to be world-class, adhering to international standards. These trainsets are expected to feature top-notch interiors with lightweight and corrosion-resistant GFRP panels, sleek aerodynamic exteriors, enhanced safety measures, modular pantry, ergonomically designed odor-free lavatories, and modern amenities to enhance the travel experience for passengers.

BEML’s goal is to introduce the first prototype of the Vande Bharat sleeper train by March 2024. The train will consist of 16 coaches with a maximum speed of 160 kmph. It will include 1 AC 1st-class coach, 4 AC 2-tier coaches, and 11 AC 3-tier coaches, offering a total berth capacity of 823.

The comprehensive design of these sleeper trains prioritizes passenger comfort, with a focus on reducing jolts and enhancing the overall travel experience. The attention to detail in the internal furnishings and layout aims to set this train apart from the Rajdhani Express, offering a superior level of comfort for long-distance journeys.

As India progresses toward launching these state-of-the-art sleeper trains, it seeks to provide an unparalleled travel experience while elevating the nation’s railway infrastructure to international standards.
