In a post-Covid era marked by adaptability, prestigious educational institutions in India, including the renowned Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), have adopted a sophisticated approach to hiring practices. In a bid to maintain the agility exhibited during the pandemic, these institutions have not only retained their online recruitment methods but also introduced a hybrid approach. This strategic shift offers both online and offline avenues for hiring companies, as reported by ET.
Despite the return to relative normalcy following the Covid-19 pandemic, leading academic institutions such as IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Indore, and IIM Kozhikode have chosen to continue offering online recruitment solutions. This approach is proving to be a boon for recruiting entities, allowing them to save time and resources by leveraging the convenience of online processes. Moreover, it ensures that institutions situated in remote areas are not at a disadvantage compared to their counterparts in central hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
The adoption of online recruitment is multifaceted, catering especially to institutions in geographically challenging locations. It is also favored in cases of urgency and when convenience is paramount. As noted by Himanshu Rai, the Director of IIM Indore, the far-reaching impact of Covid-19 has necessitated the transformation of established institutions, enabling them to seamlessly conduct essential activities, including recruitment and educational programs, in virtual environments.
The advantages of a hybrid approach to hiring are exemplified in cases of unforeseen disruptions. For instance, IIT Madras has grappled with past disruptions due to inclement weather, heavy rains, and floods. IIT Guwahati and IIM Shillong faced challenges stemming from civil unrest prompted by the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in 2019. In such scenarios, a combination of online and offline hiring methods ensures the uninterrupted flow of recruitment processes.
The adoption of hybrid hiring practices is emblematic of the adaptability demonstrated by India’s premier educational institutions. It provides recruiters with the flexibility to select the method that best aligns with their requirements, while simultaneously affording students equal opportunities, regardless of their geographic location.
While some recruiters had already ventured into online hiring before the pandemic, there has been a substantial uptick in online recruitment across IITs and IIMs. Companies have grown comfortable with this mode of hiring, and it has become a preferred behavioral choice. However, companies that place a premium on talent acquisition still prioritize in-person interactions for comprehensive evaluations.
Ashish Singh, a member of the Placement and Internship Cell at IIT Roorkee, reveals that around 20% of recruiters now favor online hiring, compared to the 5-10% before the pandemic. Nevertheless, recruiters offering substantial packages still opt for face-to-face interviews to gain deeper insights into prospective candidates.
The practice of hybrid hiring is a testament to the adaptability of top-tier Indian institutions, providing an inclusive platform for recruiters to select the most suitable method, all while ensuring equitable opportunities for students regardless of their geographical location.
