Geneva– In a heartfelt plea to global leaders, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), harkened back to his own harrowing experiences growing up amidst wartime strife in Ethiopia. His impassioned call implores for a collective endeavor towards peace and an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made this plea via the platform formerly known as Twitter, emphasizing his plea for a “humble request for a ceasefire and the restoration of peace.”
“As a youth ensnared in the shadows of conflict, I bore the intimate knowledge of its odors, resonances, and spectacles. I hold a profound empathy for those presently ensnared within the vortex of conflict, experiencing their anguish as if it were my own,” he recounted, further underscoring, “War begets naught but desolation, horror, and obliteration—no more, no less. In this pivotal juncture, let us transcend our divisions and embrace the path to serenity. The most resolute manifestation of valor manifests in the advocacy of peace. I earnestly implore leaders worldwide to unite and lead the world toward harmony.”
This appeal comes in the midst of Israel’s forceful bombardment of Gaza, as it penetrates deeper into the enclave, advancing from two fronts towards the principal city within the region. Alarming reports have emerged from the United Nations and healthcare practitioners, cautioning that airstrikes have intensified in proximity to medical facilities, where tens of thousands of Palestinians have sought refuge, alongside numerous wounded individuals. The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip has reported a staggering toll, asserting that the strikes have claimed the lives of over 8,000 individuals, primarily civilians, with a significant portion being children.
Prior to this plea, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus unequivocally condemned the “unjustifiable and horrific” assault executed by Hamas, emphatically asserting that the collateral damage is most acutely borne by innocent children, subject to the relentless bombardment of targets within Gaza.
It is worth noting that the WHO’s Chief secured his re-election for a second term in May. During that period, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had candidly revisited his modest upbringing as “a child of war, hailing from a humble family.”
Reflecting on how profound emotions surged back to the forefront during his recent visit to Ukraine, he was moved to tears as he recollected, “When I beheld those children, an image from over five decades ago reverberated in my thoughts. It was strikingly vivid, haunting; the redolence of war, the clamor of conflict, and the stark imagery of strife. That’s a fate I wish to spare no one. Thus, my fervent hope is for peace to materialize.”
