House Republicans Propose $14.3 Billion Aid for Israel by Slashing IRS Funds”

Las Vegas, Nevada – At the Republican Jewish Coalition’s 2023 annual leadership summit, House Speaker Mike Johnson unveiled a contentious proposal that has sparked significant debate. The plan, put forward by Republicans in the US House of Representatives, aims to allocate $14.3 billion in aid to Israel while simultaneously cutting funding for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This move sets the stage for a political showdown, given that Democrats hold control of the Senate.

In a significant departure from President Joe Biden’s request for a comprehensive $106 billion aid package encompassing Israel, Ukraine, and border security, the House Republicans presented a standalone supplementary spending bill specifically tailored for Israel. Speaker Johnson, who had previously voted against aid for Ukraine, emphasized his desire to segregate funding for Israel and Ukraine, asserting that this approach would allow for greater financial accountability, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleb expressed optimism about garnering additional support for Ukraine’s military from the House, despite acknowledged political resistance to the bill’s provisions. Meanwhile, Speaker Johnson defended his decision to “bifurcate” the funding issues for Ukraine and Israel.

Speaker Johnson’s rationale for prioritizing support for Israel stemmed from the recent attack by Hamas on October 7th, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,400 people and the taking of over 200 hostages. However, Democrats have accused House Republicans of introducing a partisan bill that obstructs Congress’s ability to provide timely aid to Israel.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre strongly criticized the Republicans, accusing them of “politicizing national security” and labeling their bill a non-starter. For the measure to become law, it must pass both the House and the Senate and receive President Joe Biden’s signature.

The House Rules Committee is scheduled to review the Republican Israel bill on Wednesday, with significant political and public attention focused on the outcome of this divisive proposal.

This move has prompted significant debate and controversy in Washington, with both political parties clashing over the approach to providing aid to Israel and Ukraine. The outcome of this legislative battle will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for US foreign policy and the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
