In a tragic incident, a massive fire engulfed a drug rehabilitation center in northern Iran, resulting in the loss of at least 27 lives. The disaster unfolded early on Friday in Langarud, a city situated in the Gilan province, north of Tehran.

The judiciary announced the grim news, stating that 27 individuals perished in the fire, and an additional 12 were rushed to hospitals for treatment. Esmail Sadeghi, the provincial chief justice, conveyed this information through the judiciary’s Mizan Online news website.

The cause of the fire remains shrouded in uncertainty, but authorities have launched an investigation to uncover the circumstances leading to this devastating incident. The rehabilitation center had a capacity to house up to 40 people.

Footage shared by the local ISNA news agency captured the horrifying blaze, which illuminated the night sky and cast massive plumes of smoke into the air. Subsequent images depicted the extensive damage inflicted upon the facility once the fire was brought under control.

This incident follows previous fire-related tragedies in Iran, including a fire in Tehran’s grand bazaar in August, which resulted in damage to numerous shops but, fortunately, caused no casualties. In January 2017, a fire at the 15-story Plasco shopping center in Tehran claimed the lives of at least 22 people, including 16 firefighters.
