Menlo Park, California – Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta Platforms and an avid enthusiast of mixed martial arts (MMA), found himself on the operating table following a recent martial arts sparring session. He took to social media on Friday to share the news that he had suffered a tear in one of his anterior cruciate ligaments, commonly known as ACL, while preparing for a competitive MMA fight scheduled for early next year.

A photo posted on his Instagram account revealed Zuckerberg lying in a hospital bed with his left knee meticulously elevated, enveloped in bandages, and secured with a supportive brace.

Zuckerberg’s Instagram post read, “Tore my ACL sparring and just got out of surgery to replace it. Grateful for the doctors and the dedicated team that took care of me. My preparations for the competitive MMA fight next year are temporarily delayed, but I eagerly look forward to resuming once I’ve fully recovered. I sincerely appreciate everyone’s love and support.”

Meta, headquartered in Menlo Park, California, did not immediately respond to an email seeking additional comments on the matter.

Notably, Zuckerberg, who earlier this year participated in his first jiu-jitsu tournament, has consistently shared updates on his martial arts journey. Just a few weeks ago, he posted a close-up photograph of his face on Instagram, displaying visible bruising on the bridge of his nose and under his eyes, which he attributed to a spirited sparring session that had “intensified.”

During the summer, Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk gained media attention when the two tech titans seemed to have agreed to an in-person face-off set for late June. Their online exchanges, filled with playful taunts and remarks, fueled public interest in the potential showdown. Elon Musk, at one point, highlighted his training routine, including weightlifting.

However, in August, the Tesla CEO revealed via social media that he might require surgery before the fight could proceed. Zuckerberg subsequently announced his readiness to move on via the Threads social media app, stating, “If Elon ever gets serious about a genuine encounter and an official event, he knows how to reach me. Otherwise, it’s time to shift our focus. I intend to compete with those who approach the sport with a serious commitment.”

This incident underscores the inherent risks associated with rigorous MMA training and the determination of individuals to pursue their passion for the sport, even amidst challenges.
