In a strategic move, Nvidia, under the leadership of co-founder and CEO Jensen Huang, is reportedly preparing to launch three innovative chips tailored for the Chinese market. This development comes in the wake of recent restrictions imposed by the United States, which prevented Nvidia from selling two high-end artificial intelligence (AI) chips and a top-tier gaming chip to Chinese entities.
The anticipated chips, namely the HGX H20, L20 PCIe, and L2 PCIe, are expected to be officially announced on November 16, as per insights gleaned from the Star Market Daily news outlet, citing individuals familiar with the matter. When approached for comment, Nvidia declined to provide official statements regarding the impending release.
Last month, Nvidia, a major player in the US AI chip domain, disclosed that the newly introduced export restrictions from Washington would hinder the sale of two modified advanced AI chips, namely the A800 and H800. Both chips were specifically crafted for the Chinese market in compliance with prior export regulations. Additionally, the export constraints would impact one of Nvidia’s premier gaming chips, the L40S, unveiled in August.
The US-imposed restrictions, which were expedited beyond the initial deadline, had an immediate impact on Nvidia’s operations. With over a 90% share of China’s $7 billion AI chip market, the limitations are expected to create opportunities for domestic enterprises such as Huawei Technologies to gain traction.
Notably, the Chinese tech giant Baidu reportedly secured a substantial order for Huawei AI chips earlier this year, a move speculated to predate the US restrictions. Sources indicate that Baidu proactively sought alternatives, anticipating a scenario where procurement from Nvidia would no longer be feasible.
In response to these developments, Nvidia’s shares experienced a 1.8% rise during pre-market trading in New York, reflecting the market’s response to the company’s strategic adjustments amid geopolitical dynamics.
As geopolitical complexities continue to shape the landscape of technology and AI development, Nvidia’s unveiling of these advanced AI chips signifies a proactive approach to navigate the evolving regulatory environment while sustaining its presence in the Chinese market.
