A large-scale rescue mission is in progress to extricate approximately 40 construction laborers trapped following a partial collapse of the entrance to the Silkyara tunnel in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. The incident occurred during the early hours of Sunday morning, leaving dozens of workers stranded inside the tunnel, which was part of a significant road project in the region.
As of Monday, officials have established contact with the trapped workers using walkie-talkies, confirming that all individuals inside are alive. In a race against time, funnels have been strategically inserted through the collapsed construction to provide much-needed oxygen and compressed food packets to the entrapped workers. Authorities estimate that the workers have approximately eight to 10 hours before the tunnel’s oxygen supply is depleted.
The majority of those stuck inside are reported to be migrant laborers from various parts of the country. Prashant Kumar, a state official, assured, “Everyone is safe, and we are in constant touch with the trapped workers.”
The ongoing rescue effort, under the supervision of the police and the state disaster response force, entered its second day on Monday. Heavy machinery and excavators have been deployed to remove the considerable rubble and debris hindering access to the trapped workers. While more than 20 meters of concrete rubble and twisted metal have been cleared, an additional 35 meters must be excavated to reach the trapped individuals.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami, present at the scene, announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged “all possible help” for the rescue operation. He expressed hope for a swift resolution to the crisis. The collapsed tunnel is part of the Char Dam road project, covering a distance of 900 km and designed to enhance connectivity through the challenging terrain of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand.
This ambitious project has faced controversies and legal challenges, with environmentalists and locals expressing concerns about its impact on the fragile Himalayan landscape. Issues related to subsidence, landslides, and the erosion of forests and local ecology have been associated with the Char Dam road initiative.
As the rescue operation unfolds, authorities are mobilizing resources and expertise to navigate the complex challenges posed by the collapsed tunnel and to ensure the safety of the trapped workers.
