In a move driven by concerns over its impact on “social harmony,” Nepal has declared its intention to ban TikTok, a widely used video-sharing platform with approximately one billion monthly users. The decision, announced by the Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, stems from the platform’s alleged role in disturbing family structures and social relations.
Government Cites Disruption of Social Harmony
Minister Sharma emphasized that TikTok has consistently been utilized for sharing content that disrupts social harmony and negatively influences family structures. The decision, she stated, was prompted by the need to address these concerns. However, specific details triggering the ban were not disclosed.
Concerns over Freedom of Expression
Gagan Thapa, a leader of the Nepali Congress party, part of the ruling coalition, expressed apprehension regarding the government’s move, suggesting it might be an attempt to suppress freedom of expression. While acknowledging the necessity of regulation to deter misuse of social media, Thapa criticized the approach of shutting down social media platforms in the name of regulation.
Regulatory Measures and Social Media Offices
This decision follows closely on the heels of Nepal’s recent directive requiring social media platforms operating within the country to establish physical offices. The move to ban TikTok is seen as part of a broader effort to exert control over social media platforms due to concerns about their potential impact, especially on the younger population.
Global Impact of TikTok
Ranked as the sixth-most used social platform globally, TikTok, owned by ByteDance, has faced scrutiny in various countries over data rule breaches and potential harm to youth through its content. While ByteDance is a Chinese company, it disputes claims of being directly controlled by Beijing. Despite facing competition from established platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, TikTok’s growth among the younger demographic has been substantial.
