While addressing the crowd in Barmer district, Rahul Gandhi stated, “Our guys were playing well, they would have won the World Cup. But ‘Panauti’ made us lose. The TV guys won’t tell you this, but people know.” Australia defeated India by six wickets to clinch the ICC World Cup trophy at Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.
The term ‘panauti’ trended on social media following Team India’s loss. Ravi Shankar Prasad condemned Gandhi’s choice of words and urged him to apologize, questioning the appropriateness of using such language for the Prime Minister.
Rahul Gandhi was campaigning in Rajasthan ahead of the elections scheduled for November 25, where 199 out of 200 assembly seats will be contested.
