In a captivating session at the 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), renowned actor Vijay Sethupathi revealed his decision to step back from portraying villainous characters and expressed his eagerness to delve into protagonist and character roles.

During the masterclass, conducted in an interactive manner with actor-politician Kushboo Sundar, Sethupathi, known for his versatility, emphasized the importance of not taking the conversation too seriously. Addressing the audience with humility, he shared glimpses of his journey and acting philosophy.

The actor, who gained applause upon entering the stage, started the session with a light-hearted remark, stating, “I don’t even know what to do in front of a camera. Just treat me like one of you. Let’s create and share.” He thanked his wife, Jessy Sethupathi, for redirecting his life towards cinema by preventing him from returning to his regular job in Dubai.

Known for his spontaneous acting style, Sethupathi expressed his lack of adherence to any specific acting method. He emphasized the importance of interactions with people and the exchange of ideas in shaping one’s knowledge.

Reflecting on his journey from his first film to the present, Sethupathi discussed the evolution of his approach, stating, “During my first film, there was fear of making a mistake and somewhere I wanted to impress the director. Now, I focus on how to do it. I’m a much secure actor now.”

Acknowledging the challenges and limitations faced while portraying negative roles, Sethupathi revealed his decision to take a break from villainous characters. He expressed his desire to explore new dimensions by focusing on protagonist and character roles, liberating himself from the pressures and restrictions associated with negative characters.

The actor concluded the session by providing insights into his unconventional style, sharing an anecdote about feeling like an alien at a formal event. Despite the insecurities, Sethupathi embraces his authenticity, staying true to his style, highlighted by a simple blue shirt and jeans.

As Vijay Sethupathi takes a hiatus from playing the antagonist, the audience eagerly awaits his exploration of diverse roles in the realm of Indian cinema.
