London, The case of Gurmit Kaur, a 78-year-old Indian Sikh woman facing deportation, continues to gain widespread community support in England’s West Midlands. Having arrived in the UK in 2009, Gurmit Kaur, who has no family in the UK or Punjab, has become a focal point of local activism.

An online petition, “We Are All Gurmit Kaur,” has garnered over 65,000 signatures since its launch in July 2020. The petition highlights her contributions to the local Sikh community, emphasizing her kindness and dedication to volunteering at the local gurdwara.

The UK Home Office contends that Gurmit Kaur is in contact with people in her village in Punjab and could readjust to life there. However, supporters argue that she has no family or support in Punjab and has lived in the UK for over a decade.

Salman Mirza, an immigration advisor, stated that Gurmit Kaur’s situation is akin to “water torture, a slow death,” emphasizing her lack of resources and support in Punjab.

The Home Office maintains that all applications are considered on an individual basis, but Gurmit Kaur’s supporters continue to rally against her deportation.
