Gujarat:A series of lightning strikes in the western Indian state of Gujarat has left 24 people dead and approximately 23 others injured in incidents related to heavy rainfall, as reported by government officials. The state witnessed intense thunderstorms and hailstorms over the past two days, resulting in widespread damage.

As per state government data, some regions received up to 144 millimetres (5.7 inches) of rain in the 24 hours ending on Monday morning. The relentless downpour has caused havoc, damaging houses and leading to the loss of cattle. Gujarat Agriculture Minister Raghavij Patel stated that a comprehensive survey will be initiated to assess the extent of the losses, and compensation will be provided to victims based on the survey’s outcomes.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating the continuation of rainfall in certain parts of the state on Monday.

Gujarat has a history of grappling with rain-related calamities. In August 2020, the state witnessed 14 casualties within a span of two days due to incidents linked to heavy rains and flooding. Similarly, in August 2019, 31 people lost their lives in rain-related events in Gujarat.
