The Digital India Bill is set to be addressed by the next government as it requires thorough consultation, according to Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Speaking at the Financial Express DigiFraud & Safety Summit 2023, he stated that due to the necessity for substantial discussion and debate, it won’t meet the legislative window before the upcoming elections.

Chandrasekhar emphasized the importance of a well-considered approach to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) in India. He outlined a hybrid strategy, combining elements of market regulation akin to the United States and safeguarding citizens’ rights as seen in Europe.

“The legislation for this is the Digital India Bill,” Chandrasekhar affirmed, noting the government’s commitment to harnessing AI’s power while ensuring safety for individuals and communities. He highlighted a focus on real-life use cases in healthcare, agriculture, governance, language translation, and expressed the government’s intent to invest in the startup ecosystem to bolster these initiatives.

The proposed Digital India Bill is expected to undergo public consultation in the coming months, with the government concurrently exploring a separate law to address challenges posed by deepfakes.
