In a shift over the past year, Canada and the US remain top choices for Indian students pursuing higher education abroad, as per The Indian Students Mobility Report 2023. Notably, the UK has surpassed Australia to claim the third position, experiencing significant year-over-year growth of 49.6%. Canada showed the highest growth rate, increasing by 46.8%, while the US witnessed an 18.9% growth. Canada has been the primary choice for Indian students in three out of the last four years.

Over the last five years, Canada has seen substantial growth in Indian student intake, nearly doubling its numbers and experiencing an 86% increase. The UK’s rise in popularity indicates a changing trend, with Australia’s standing gradually diminishing. The report introduces three key matrices, offering insights into the spending on study abroad, revealing that nearly 8.5 lakh students collectively spent close to US$ 34 billion in 2023 across the US, UK, Australia, and Canada.

– United States: Indian students contribute around US $12.48 billion (approx ₹92,976 crore), covering academic fees, accommodation, and living expenses.

– Canada: With around 3,00,000 Indian students, the estimated total expenditure is US $11.7 billion (approx Rs 87,036 crore).

– Australia: Approximately 132,000 Indian students spend an estimated total of US $5.9 billion (approx Rs 43,764 crore).
