Chennai, In a significant development, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised a red alert for North Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, anticipating an imminent threat of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by extremely heavy falls. This alert comes in response to the looming Cyclone Michaung, currently intensifying in the Bay of Bengal.
The affected areas include Vellore, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Thiruvannamalai, Kallakkurichi, Cuddalore, and Kancheepuram, where residents are urged to brace for potential challenges posed by the adverse weather conditions. Additionally, other regions in the state are expected to experience thunderstorms and lightning.
The deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal has transformed into Cyclonic Storm Michaung, positioned about 300 km east-southeast of Puducherry, 310 km southeast of Chennai, 440 km southeast of Nellore, and 550 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam. The cyclone is projected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam on December 5, with anticipated wind speeds of up to 100 kmph.
High tides have already been observed in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, as the cyclonic storm intensifies. The looming threat has also led to precautionary measures, with Puducherry declaring a holiday for colleges on December 4.
Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFS) personnel are actively engaged in rescue operations for flood-affected victims in various areas, including Red Hills in Tiruvallur. The IMD has issued a comprehensive cyclone alert for Andhra Pradesh and the adjoining North Tamil Nadu coasts for the next 12 hours.
