New Delhi:The Trinamool Congress (TMC), a key ally of the Indian National Congress in the INDIA alliance, has claimed the “leadership in the battle to defeat the BJP” following the Congress’s disappointing performance in the assembly elections of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan.

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh attributed the Congress’s electoral failures to internal issues and asserted that the results were more indicative of the Congress’s shortcomings than the BJP’s triumph.

“In the three states, it is more of a failure of the Congress than a success story of the BJP,” Ghosh stated.

Despite the setback, Ghosh emphasized that the assembly election outcomes would not adversely impact the INDIA alliance’s prospects in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

He further expressed confidence in the TMC’s ability to provide leadership in the nationwide effort to counter the BJP, suggesting that the party would focus on Mamata Banerjee’s welfarism as a guiding principle.

The Congress, aiming to enhance its standing within the INDIA alliance, is now confronted with increased pressure from regional allies, particularly after the BJP’s significant victories in the Hindi heartland states.

Meanwhile, former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad attributed the party’s defeat to a perceived neglect of minority issues. Azad noted a shift in the Congress’s focus away from championing minority rights, stating, “Now minorities are not in the agenda of Congress.”

As the political landscape evolves, these election results are expected to shape the dynamics within the INDIA alliance.
